Wheelwright

Wheelwright, Kentucky, nestled in Floyd County, owes its existence and development entirely to the Consolidation Coal Company. Founded in 1916 by the Elk Horn Coal Corporation, a subsidiary of Consolidation Coal, the town was a quintessential company town, built to house and serve the miners and their families working in the nearby coal mines. The town was named after Jere H. Wheelwright, a prominent coal operator and president of Consolidation Coal. Like many Appalachian communities, Wheelwright's fortunes rose and fell with the coal industry, experiencing periods of prosperity and hardship depending on the demand for coal.
