The story of West Point

West Point, Kentucky, sits strategically at the confluence of the Ohio and Salt Rivers, a location that has shaped its destiny since its earliest days. Founded near a Native American village known as "Salt Lick Town", the area's access to water made it a crucial transportation hub. Steamboats utilized the rivers extensively for trade and travel in the 19th century, making West Point a vital port for Kentucky's agricultural and industrial output. The town's growth was also impacted by its proximity to Fort Duffield, a strategically important Civil War fortification that protected Louisville from Confederate incursions. The town's strategic location made it a target during Confederate raids.
