Raywick

Raywick, Kentucky, located in Marion County, boasts a rich history deeply intertwined with the early Catholic settlers of the region. Founded in the late 18th century, the area was initially known as "Pottinger's Station," a fortified settlement providing refuge during the turbulent frontier period. As the Catholic population grew, largely due to the encouragement of Father Stephen Theodore Badin, the first priest ordained in the United States, the focus shifted to religious life. The name "Raywick" is believed to have originated from the Ray family, prominent landowners and early settlers who contributed significantly to the community's development. The establishment of St. Xavier Catholic Church in 1816 solidified Raywick as a pivotal Catholic center in Kentucky.

The legacy of Raywick extends beyond its religious roots. During the Civil War, Marion County witnessed divided loyalties, and while specific events within Raywick are less extensively documented compared to larger towns, its residents undoubtedly contributed to the broader conflict. Raywick is also home to the historic "The Half Crown" building. Said to have originated in Ireland, the Half Crown was moved to Kentucky in 1807 and used to host the first Mass in Central Kentucky. It was reconstructed again in 1814, making it the oldest standing building in Raywick.
