Welcome to
Kentucky· Est. 1912
Step back in time to Jenkins, Kentucky, where coal built a town and history echoes in every brick-laid street.
Jenkins was one of the first towns in Eastern Kentucky to have electric lights and a modern sewer system.
The town was designed by landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted Jr., son of the designer of Central Park in New York City.
During its peak, Jenkins had a population of over 10,000 residents.
The Jenkins Historical Museum showcases the history of the town and the coal mining industry.
Jenkins, Kentucky, stands as a testament to the coal boom that shaped much of Eastern Kentucky in the early 20th century. Founded in 1912 by the Consolidation Coal Company, it was a planned community designed to house miners and their families. Unlike many haphazardly grown mining towns, Jenkins was meticulously laid out with modern amenities for its time, including paved streets, electric lights, and even a hospital. The town's name honors Albert Gallatin Jenkins, a Confederate general who owned the land before the coal company's arrival, connecting it to the broader history of the Civil War's legacy in the region.
Jenkins played a crucial role in supplying coal to fuel the nation's industrial growth during both World Wars and the subsequent economic expansion. Its relatively well-planned infrastructure and company-provided services distinguished it from other coal towns, offering a glimpse into a more paternalistic approach to industrial development. However, like many coal towns, Jenkins faced economic hardship as coal production declined in the latter half of the 20th century, prompting the community to diversify its economy and focus on tourism, showcasing its rich mining heritage and Appalachian culture. Today, visitors can explore the town's historic architecture and learn about the lives of the coal miners who built and sustained it.
Jenkins' story is significant not only for its local history but also for its connection to larger national trends: the rise and fall of coal as a dominant energy source, the challenges of industrial development in rural areas, and the resilience of Appalachian communities in adapting to changing economic landscapes. The town serves as a tangible reminder of the vital role that coal played in shaping the United States and the enduring spirit of its people.
