The story of Hindman

Hindman, Kentucky, nestled in the heart of Knott County, owes its existence to the efforts of Colonel James Rowan Hindman, who secured its designation as the county seat in 1884. The town's early development was closely tied to the burgeoning coal industry and timber resources of the region. However, Hindman distinguishes itself through its deep commitment to Appalachian culture and education. It is home to the Hindman Settlement School, founded in 1902 by May Stone and Katherine Pettit, which played a crucial role in providing educational opportunities and preserving traditional Appalachian crafts, music, and storytelling. The Settlement School continues to be a vital center for community engagement and cultural preservation, drawing visitors and scholars interested in understanding and celebrating Appalachian heritage.
