Grand Rivers, Kentucky, nestled between Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley, owes its existence and identity to these vast bodies of water. The town's history is inextricably linked to the creation of the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) in the 1930s and the subsequent construction of Kentucky Dam. Before the lakes, the area was primarily farmland, but the dam project dramatically reshaped the landscape and the economy, transforming it into a tourism and recreation hub. The town was originally established as the site where two rivers merged. It quickly became a central location during the construction of the Kentucky Dam, where thousands of construction workers temporarily resided, and its history has been one of embracing the region's natural beauty and recreational opportunities.
Grand Rivers became a haven for boaters, anglers, and vacationers. The town capitalized on its location, developing marinas, resorts, and restaurants that cater to the lake tourism industry. The Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area, a vast peninsula situated between Kentucky and Barkley Lakes, further amplified the town's appeal as a gateway to outdoor adventures. While the TVA's initial purpose was to control flooding and generate electricity, its secondary effect was to create a recreational paradise that sustains Grand Rivers. The town has become an important stop along the Great River Road.
