Fort Thomas, Kentucky, is a city deeply intertwined with its military history. Originally part of Campbell County, the area was primarily farmland until the late 19th century. In 1887, the U.S. Army established a military post on what was known as "the Highlands," seeking a location away from the Ohio River's pollution that plagued the Newport Barracks. Named in honor of General George Henry Thomas, a Union hero of the Civil War, Fort Thomas served as a recruitment and training center, a role it fulfilled through both World Wars. The fort's strategic location overlooking the Ohio River also meant it played a role in defense, though it never saw direct combat. The city of Fort Thomas grew around the military base, benefiting from the economic activity and the influx of military personnel and their families.
After World War II, the Army significantly downsized its operations at Fort Thomas, and in the 1960s, most of the land was sold to the city. The remaining portion continues to be used as a military reserve center and veterans' affairs office. Today, Fort Thomas is a residential community known for its historic architecture, particularly the stately homes built during the fort's peak years. The preservation of many of the original fort buildings, now repurposed for civic and residential use, provides a tangible link to the city's past. The city's location on the "Highlands" offers beautiful views of the Ohio River and Cincinnati skyline. Fort Thomas is also well known for its excellent public schools and beautiful parks.
