Eddyville

Eddyville, Kentucky, nestled on the banks of the Cumberland River, boasts a history deeply intertwined with the river's role in transportation and commerce. Founded in the early 19th century, its strategic location made it a vital steamboat landing, serving as a hub for trade in agricultural goods and manufactured products. The town's name is believed to derive from the eddy currents in the river, highlighting its close relationship with the waterway. Lyon County, in which Eddyville resides, also saw conflict during the Civil War, and while Eddyville itself wasn't a major battle site, its proximity to the river made it a strategically important area for both Union and Confederate forces. Eddyville is perhaps most known as the home of the Kentucky State Penitentiary, often referred to simply as "Eddyville."
