Barbourmeade

Barbourmeade is an unincorporated community located in Jefferson County, Kentucky, situated in the rolling hills of the Bluegrass region just outside Louisville. The area was first settled in the early 19th century by families of Scots‑Irish and English descent who were drawn to the fertile limestone soils ideal for farming and livestock. The name "Barbourmeade" is thought to derive from the Barbour family, early landowners who established a homestead on a meadow‑like tract of land, with "meade" reflecting the Old English word for meadow.

Throughout the 1800s, Barbourmeade remained a predominantly agricultural community, producing tobacco, corn, and later thoroughbred horses that contributed to Kentucky’s growing equine reputation. Its proximity to Louisville allowed residents to participate in the city’s mercantile and cultural life while retaining a rural character. During the Civil War, the region leaned toward Union sympathies, and local farms supplied food and horses to Union forces stationed in Louisville. After the war, the community saw gradual modernization with the introduction of railroads and improved roads, yet it retained much of its historic landscape.

Today, Barbourmeade offers visitors a glimpse into Kentucky’s pastoral heritage. The surrounding countryside features preserved stone fences, historic farmsteads, and scenic vistas that attract those interested in the state’s agrarian roots and horse‑country charm. While not a major tourist destination itself, its location near the Louisville Loop, the Bourbon Trail, and historic sites such as Locust Grove and Farmington makes it a convenient stop for travelers exploring the broader cultural and historical tapestry of Jefferson County.
